These influential performances prove the importance of the genre and the growth it saw over the past few decades.

Current day Christian Gospel music has stayed as popular as it was in 1959. The genre has split into various different subgenres such as urban contemporary gospel, gospel blues, southern gospel, and Christian country gospel to name a few. Some of the most popular gospel songs such as Oh Happy Day, We Shall Overcome, and Hes Got The Whole World In His Hands have been rearranged and become popular within other genres of music as well. Gospel music appears in popular movies and television series such as Glee. All of these examples identify how widespread and popular the genre of Gospel music has become.
