Largely known for his innovation at the forefront of the 1960's free jazz movement, Ornette Coleman has far exceeded legendary status on the saxophone. Crafting a unique sound from his alto saxophone, Coleman is known for drawing from the blues, as well as near vocal like melodies. In 2007 he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his album Sound Grammar. He also been honored with Grammy award for Lifetime Achievement and the University of Michigan awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Music.
