Digable Planets
Though they were not the first to fuse jazz and hip-hop, Digable Planets epitomized the laid-back charm of jazz hipsters better than any group before or since. Digable Planets consists of Ladybug Mecca, Butterfly, and Doodlebug. The trio’s 1993 debut album, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), was a mellow ride packed with samples from Art Blakely, Sonny Rollins, and Curtis Mayfield.
Its principle single, “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat),†became a Top 20 pop hit and remains today the most important song in the realm of the fusion of hip-hop and jazz.
This song earned them the Grammy for “Best Performance by a Duo or Group†in 1994; they also received a nomination for the Grammy for “Best New Artist†that same year. In late 1994, they released their second album, Blowout Comb, which continued the group’s jazz-rap fusion and also saw them branching out to embrace the old school sound of the street.
Digable Planets disbanded due to creative differences after touring in support of their second album. They reunited in 2005 for nearly a year and performed at clubs and festivals in North America, Europe, and Australia. Rumors of a new album have recently been surfacing.
